Hawk Fire Explodes Past 15,000 Acres as Mass Evacuations Grip Reno RENO, Nevada — August 24, 2026 — A fast-moving wildfire burning on the outskirts of Reno has grown beyond 15,000 acres, forcing tens of thousands of residents from their homes as firefighters battle shifting winds and extremely dry conditions. The Hawk Fire, which began Saturday in the Sierra Nevada foothills northwest of Reno, remained 0% contained Sunday evening. Authorities say approximately 42,000 people are in mandatory “GO NOW” evacuation zones, while another 45,000 residents have been placed under evacuation warnings. At least six people — three civilians and three first responders — have been injured. Their injuries have been reported as non-life-threatening. Several structures have been destroyed or damaged, although authorities have not yet released a complete assessment of the losses. Thousands of homes and businesses have also experienced power outages. Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo declared a state of emergency in Washoe County and mobilized the Nevada National Guard as the fire threatened increasingly populated areas. National Guard helicopters and personnel have joined the response, while hundreds of local, state and federal firefighters are battling the blaze. The evacuation area has expanded toward northwest Reno and reached the edge of the University of Nevada, Reno campus. Schools across much of Washoe County were closed Monday, while road closures and evacuations have caused significant disruption throughout the region. Fire officials say the Hawk Fire was human-caused, although investigators have not determined publicly whether the ignition was accidental or intentional. Strong and unpredictable winds, low humidity and extremely dry vegetation have complicated containment efforts. Officials have repeatedly warned residents not to underestimate the danger even when conditions temporarily appear calmer.
